Fought over the first three days of June in 1863, the Battle of Gettysburg is perhaps the Civil War's most famous clash. A turning point for the Union, which also defeated Confederate forces at Vicksburg in the same summer, the battle also saw the largest number of American casualties in the war with some 45,000-50,000 soldiers killed or wounded. President Lincoln would go on to deliver his historic Gettysburg Address at the site's national cemetery on November 19, 1863.
