On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 was the spaceflight that landed the first two astronauts, Mission Commander Neil Armstrong and Pilot Buzz Aldrin on the moon. They guided their Eagle lander to Tranquility Base while crewmate Michael Collins circled above inside the command module Columbia. Neil Armstrong was the first human to step onto the moon’s surface, while everyone on Earth watched and listened; “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” The landing put the United States at the forefront of the Space Race, and is NASA's pinnacle achievement since its inception.
